La largamente esperada 40ª Olimpiada de Ajedrez dio comienzo hoy en el Estambul Expo Center, con la dispute de la primera ronda. Una cifra récord de 158 equipos compiten en la Sección Open (antes llamada 'masculina'), mientras que en la Sección Femenina la participación se cifra en 124 selecciones.

El Ministro Turco de Juventud y Deporte, Suat Kilic, hizo la jugada inaugural en nombre del GM Zhao Xue en el choque China - Bangladesh. El Presidente de la FIDE; Kirsan Iliumzhinov y el Presidente de la Federación Turca de Ajedrez, Ali Nihat, fueron los testigos en esta jugada de honor. Como sucede en los torneos por Sistema Suizo, los equipos más fuertes se enfrentaron a los de menor rating.

Muchos de los mejores jugadores del mundo participantes en esta Olimpiada se sentaron frente al tablero en esta primera ronda. Así, el número 4 del ránking mundial, Teymour Radjabov, defendió el primer tablero de Azerbayán, anotándose una importante victoria frente al MI luxemburgués Michael Wiedenkeller. Azerbayán se anotó así un convincente 4-0.

En la Sección Open Ucrania repitió casualmente rival y resultado, derrotando a Iraq nuevamente por 4-0 tal como ya hiciera en la última Olimpiada, en Khanty-Mansiysk, donde los ucranianos se hicieron con el oro. ¿Un prefacio de que la historia va a repetirse?

 Estados Unidos también se aseguró el marcador perfecto, un 4-0 ante Jordania, mientras qye Armenia sólo pudo obtener un 3-1 de su encuentro con Bolivia. El primer y único Gran Maestro de Bolivia, Oswaldo Zambrana, asombró con su victoria ante un jugador teóricamente muy superior como es Sergei Movsesian.

Otro eterno favorite, Rusia, parecía tener un encuentro fácil poniendo rápidamente el marcador en 3-0 ante República Dominicana, pero en una de las partidas más largas de la jornada el MF William Puntier consiguió arrancar unas tablas al GM Eugeny Tomashevsky.

En la Sección Femenina los equipos favoritos obtuvieron victorias convincentes. China, Rusia, Georgia, EEUU, India y Polonia se anotaron el 4-0 contra Bangladesh, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nueva Zelanda, FYROM y República Dominicana, respectivamente.
Sin embargo, la WIM Lougain Dahdal, de Jordania, derrotó a la MI Lilit Galojan, de Armenia, reduciendo el margen de la derrota a un meritorio 1-3.

La WFM Gabriela Maria Avelar Bonilla de El Salvador también arrancó un empale ante una jugadora de ráting buy superior, la MI Anna Ushenina de Ucrania. Sin embargo eso no impidió la victoria de las ucranianas por 3,5-0,5.

On the contrary, the Turkish A teams (men and women), faced much weaker opponents and won convincingly, 4:0 against the Thailand (Open) team and Trinidad Tobago (women). The Turkey 2016 team won 4:0 against Rhuanda.

On the verge of a big sensation was the Turkey 2016 girl’s team which played against the strong team of Mongolia, who carelessly gave their leader Monguntuul a free day. The match started in a very unlucky way – Selen Sop, overlooked a tactic and lost the game very quickly. On the second board Büşra Adig won a beautiful game against a Woman International Master.

Yeşim Patel played a good game and could have played for a win but she settled for a half point.
